Eligibility for a U.S. summer camp job has two layers. The first is the official J-1 Camp Counselor program, run by designated sponsors under U.S. Department of State rules. The second is Xpath's own screening, which we use to decide whether we can take your application forward.
This page keeps the two apart, so you know which requirements come from the U.S. government, which come from Xpath, and what to do if you are unsure.
Official J-1 Camp Counselor requirements
BridgeUSA, the U.S. Department of State's exchange visitor program, sets out who can take part in the Camp Counselor category. Your designated sponsor checks these requirements before it issues a DS-2019.
- At least 18 years old.
- A foreign post-secondary student, youth worker, teacher, or individual with specialized skills.
- English strong enough to supervise and interact with American youth.
- Screened by the sponsor, including an in-person interview and references about your suitability.
The official Camp Counselor description sets a minimum age of 18 and does not list a maximum age. Sponsors and camps may apply their own criteria.
Xpath's screening criteria
Before we support an application, we screen applicants against our own criteria. These are Xpath's criteria, not U.S. government requirements.
Our eligibility check asks about each point below. Honest answers help us tell you quickly whether we can take your application forward.
- Age: Xpath typically works with applicants aged 18 to 28.
- Studies: whether you are a university student, a recent graduate, or neither.
- Your spoken English level.
- A skill you can teach or share with children, such as a sport, art, music, or swimming.
- A valid passport, or one you are applying for.
- Travel history, including travel to certain countries the check asks about.
- Your police record.
- Whether you are ready to begin the application process.
Students, graduates, and working applicants
You do not have to be a current student for the Camp Counselor category. Youth workers, teachers, and people with specialized skills are also included in the official description.

Skills and experience that help
The official rules do not require a specific skill, but camps hire international staff to lead activities and look after children. A clear, teachable skill makes your profile easier to match.

- Sports and fitness: ball sports, athletics, and fitness coaching.
- Water sports: swimming and waterfront activities, where certifications help.
- Outdoor adventure: hiking, climbing, horse riding, and extreme sports.
- Creative skills: arts and crafts, performing arts, circus arts, and media.
- Experience with young people: coaching, teaching, volunteering, or youth leadership.
What can stop an application
Some issues can stop an application at Xpath's screening, the sponsor's screening, the camp interview, or the visa stage.
- Being under the official minimum age of 18.
- English that is not yet strong enough to supervise children.
- No valid passport, or a passport that will not be ready in time.
- Documents or answers that are inconsistent or untrue.
- A police record or background issue that a sponsor or camp cannot accept.
- Not being available for the full camp season.
Meeting the requirements does not guarantee a placement or a visa. Sponsors, camps, and U.S. consular officers each make their own decisions.
